HazMat Handling

I think I have some hazardous materials in my home/business - What do I do?

If you think you have a hazardous material in your home, do not disturb it - leave it alone until you can confirm whether or not it is a hazard.

How do I confirm if it is indeed a hazardous material?

Call an environmental consulting firm - they will come and take samples (usually 3 samples per material) and have them analyzed at a lab to determine whether or not your material is a hazard.  It usually takes about 3-5 business days to get your samples back - you can, however, rush your samples (at a premium charge, of course).
If the material is deemed a hazard, you can ask the consultant to put a scope of work together - which will outline what work needs to be done and how it should get done (according to protocol or regulation).

I have a hazardous material in my home/business- what is the next step?

The next step would be to call an environmental contractor (FERRO Canada Inc). The environmental contractor will work from the scope of work created by the consultant. After the work has been performed, the consultant should return and take clearance samples, so that you, as the home- or business-owner can be sure that the hazard has been adequately removed.

How do I know if an environmental contractor is qualified for this work?

Don’t be fooled by contractors who “say” that they can remove a hazardous material - always ask questions. Environmental contractors should be WSIB current, they should have the proper environmental liability insurance and their crews should be fully trained and knowledgeable.

Can I live/work in my home/business while remediation/abatement work is being performed?

Every situation is different and depends on the material and its location within your home or business.

How can I be sure that the hazardous material has been removed from my home/business?

Always get the environmental consultant to come back and take clearance samples and inspect the work of the environmental contractors. This will give you peace of mind that the hazardous material has been removed properly.

Now that the hazardous material has been removed, who can bring my home/business back to its original state?

FERRO Canada Inc is a turn-key operation and is capable of doing any hazardous material rebuild work. Bottom line - We can put back what we take out.
