Excerpt from Guidelines for the Investigation, Assessment, & Remediation of Mould in Workplaces
An investigation for mould contamination can be triggered by adverse health concerns of occupants, observations of growing mould, unusual odours, or events of water intrusion.
A variety of symptoms or observations, such as respiratory problems, headaches, nausea, irritation of eyes, nose, or throat, tiredness, fatigue, etc. may trigger an investigation into potential mould contamination. Mould may be observed on walls, pipes, ceiling tiles, window ledges, books, files, documents, etc. Musty odours and other unusual smells may indicate potential mould contamination. Also, any indication of water intrusion, flooding, condensation or high humidity, especially if chronic and or severe suggests potential mould contamination.
How do I know if I have Mould in my home/business?
Mould is not always easily visible or detectable. It generally likes damp and humid conditions and feeds off of pretty well anything organic. Sometimes mould is visible (and comes in many shapes and sizes) or sometimes you may smell a musty scent. Common areas for mould growth are bathrooms, basements, cold cellars, attics and kitchens.
How can I know for sure if I have mould in my home/business?
Call an environmental consulting firm - they will come and take samples (usually 3 samples). These samples are then sent to a lab for analysis. If mould is present, the consultant will put together a scope of work for removal. Mould is present naturally throughout the environment and in your home, so the consultant will usually take samples outside as a benchmark - this allows them to determine if the spore count levels are high or not, relative to the naturally occuring mould outside.
I have mould in my house/business - What do I do now?
Do not disturb it. Call an environmental contractor (FERRO Canada Inc) - the environmental contractor will work with the consulting company and their scope of work to properly remove the mould in your home or business.
How do I know if the mould has been removed from my home/business?
The environmental consultant will take final clearance samples and inspect the environmental contractor’s work and give you peace of mind that the mould in question has been properly removed.
How can I prevent mould growth in my home/business?
We always recommend a few different ways to help prevent mould in your home:
- Install dehumidifiers in notoriously damp areas (basements, cold cellars)
- Regularly clean your eaves and make sure that all downspouts are directed and extended away from the foundation
- If possible, install exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens
- Maintain your home - keep up with cleaning
- Check your roof shingles - are they past their guaranteed lifespan?
- Make sure all windows, doors and shower/tub units are properly caulked
- Make sure all drains are clean and clear of build up
