Soil Remediation

Don’t Let Contaminated Soil and Groundwater Threaten Your Project

Hazardous liquids can escape into the soil from above ground or underground storage tanks, potentially damaging your project and leaving you exposed to legal risk. Trust the certified Ferro Environmental team to remove compromised tanks, excavate soil, and decontaminate your property.

Before Building

Right after your Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) is the best time to have your soil checked and if necessary, remediated. This will give you a clean slate – and foundation – to work from when building. Although this is the easiest case to consider, there are still a few things you should do to prepare for our visit.

Have a good understanding of the extent of the problem.

Before staring it is good to understand the extent of the problem.  Note weather the extent laterally and horizontally is well defended if not what contingencies have been set aside in the budget to deal with unknowns.

Clear a path.

One of the easiest ways to do a full soil clean-up involves excavating the contaminated soil for treatment. Sometimes FERRO may even need to take it off site depending on the treatment type. For this, we’ll need a clear path to and from the work zone.

Take notes – and have paperwork in order.

Did you notice anything particularly dangerous while clearing the path, like hazardous chemicals? Take note of anything that might be important. It will help us provide a solution that cleans-up your property quicker.

Relax.

You’re in good company and in good hands. FERRO has a variety of treatments that will bring your soils back up within regulation standards within no time at all. FERRO also doesn’t just treat the soil, but groundwater as well. Treating both means the contamination is less likely to spread off site and the soils health will return sooner.

After an Accident, Spill or Contamination

Admittedly, accidents can happen at any time and for a wide range of reasons. Old tanks can develop leaks, heavy metal may build up over time, or worse, a chemical spill could happen during a shipping accident. It’s still possible and reasonable to have your site clean-up within good time and without delaying business. Prepping for FERRO’s visit is much the same as if you were just opening.

Take notes – and call FERRO.

What spilled? When? How much? Although we test the soils when we get there, take note of anything that might be important. It may provide us with a solution that cleans up your soil even quicker.

Clear a path.

It might be a little harder to provide a path when business is in full swing, but it still makes soil clean-up easier and faster. You may also wish to explain to both your employees and your clients that the area is off limits for a short period of time. It will help prevent the spread of contamination as well as any health issues that could arise.

At FERRO, we can help guide you through the process of deciding which option is right for your soil contamination problem. Take the time to contact FERRO if you have any questions about your soil remediation project. Our attitude is that no job is too big and no detail is too small.

Soil can be remediated using in-situ or ex-situ methods.

Typical in-situ soil remediation methods include

  • Biopiles (Biological): This method uses indigenous bacteria to break down petroleum hydrocarbons in excavated soil.
  • Bio Reduction and Stabilization (Biological): This method typically only needs one cycle where microorganisms change conditions in the soil so metals can precipitate near iron or sulfur.
  • Chemical Destruction (Chemical): This method blends amendment chemicals with impacted, excavated soils.
  • Chemical Stabilization by Reduction and Oxidation (Chemical): This method converts leachate toxic or hazardous soils into non-hazardous soils when the less soluble compounds in the soil precipitate.
  • Soil Washing (Physical): This method uses surfactants to separate PHCs from soil.
  • Material Segregation (Physical): This method uses different screening plants to segregate soil and solid waste.

Contaminated groundwater, on the other hand often poses more problems

While approaches vary, some of the popular approaches used are:

  • Oil and Water Separators: This method uses pumps and oil booms to remove non-aqueous phase liquids.
  • Sediment Filters: This method uses filter vessels and mesh bags with specific measurements in microns to treat groundwater and remove sediment.
  • Granular Activated Carbon Filters: This method uses GAC in a vessel to strip organics from the water.
  • Organo-Clays Filters: This method removes oils from liquid using GAC in an Organo-clay vessel.
  • Chelating Resins Filters: This method uses vessels to remove heavy metals.
  • Air Stripper: This method uses air to strip the Vinyl Chloride from water.
  • Bioreacters and Chemicals: This method uses microorganisms and chemicals to treat organic and inorganic elements in water.

15 Years Above Ground Storage Tank (AST) Removal Experience

Ferro Canada offers storage tank removal & inspection. We are licensed by the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) under the Liquid Fuels Handling Code and also employs licensed PM2 and PM3 mechanics. With over 15 years of experience, our Team of Environmental Contracting Professionals can remove your AST with minimal impact to your property.

Similar to underground storage tanks (USTs), ASTs can represent a hazard if left unattended. Section 3.4.2.1 of the Liquid Fuels Handling Code states that all above ground storage tanks out of service for two years or more – other than those classified as an API Std 650 tank – must be properly removed.

Expert Underground Storage Tank (UST) Removal

As more and more individuals are realizing the environmental hazards associated with underground storage tanks (USTs), the removal of underground storage tanks is consistently increasing.

The greatest concern lies with underground storage tanks that are not in use. Similar to ASTs, Section 2.4.2.1 of the Liquid Fuels Handling Code states that ALL underground storage tanks out of service for two years or more must be properly removed from the ground.

One of the services we offer is the decommissioning/removal of underground storage tanks (USTs). We are licensed by the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) under the Liquid Fuels Handling Code and also employ licensed PM2 and PM3 mechanics.

Our team of Environmental Contracting Professionals has over 15 years of experience removing USTs of varying sizes from every situation imaginable. Ferro is also licensed to dispose of any contaminated liquid or contaminated soils necessary according to Ministry of Environment (MOE) Regulations.

Worry-Free Soil and Groundwater Cleanup Services

At Ferro Canada, we use our expertise to take the worry off your shoulders and efficiently remove your underground storage tank while adhering to the strictest environmental standards before it becomes a hazard.
